Ah, a challenge. I love a good challenge, so when I first read that there was an eco nutrition week, and a competition prize attached, I thought, hey, let’s get involved!
So, day 1. Meat free Monday.
I do eat meat. I like it. Chicken curry, a big fat streak avec frites mmmmm… a day without meat didn’t seem too daunting – after all, it’s just a day right?
Breakfast was fine. Cereal. Easy.
Lunch – veggie sandwich, salad, erm… I voted salad, it was a sunny day. Falafal and avacado, courtesy of M&S.
Dinner – arghhhhhh – and I say this because when you live with a man who MUST EAT MEAT – it’s a bit of a pain to prepare two seperate meals (he isn’t up for the eco nutrition challenge…booooo)… so we went for pasta. mine with a basic tomato and veg based sauce, his the same but with some chicken thrown in.
Would I do it everyday? Perhaps not, but once a week isn’t too bad…
Bring on tomorrow’s challenge…. hooray!!

Well I feel like it’s been summer for a long time, and very welcome after such a long winter.
I’ve been trying a few new green things – including growing my own onions – they don’t need too much work and are growing steadily… always need an onion or two, so they should save me some cash.
The old bike has been out a fair few times already – and I’ve met people on my evening cycles who I would never have met if I were in the car…
If anyone would like to share their summer green tips then I’d love to hear them… always wanting to try new things.
Until next time…

Ahhh summer is knocking on the door and gosh am I pleased. But with summer comes the temptation to spruce up the wardrobe with all kinds of funky new styles and prints.
It’s tough from an eco point of view to say ‘no’ to what could present it was throw away fashion – but can I really resist a ‘maxi’ dress?
The answer is no, I can’t. But does this make me less eco? I’m convinced I’ll wear it again, but my mates seem to think it’s a one season wonder. Ahhh the great debate strikes again!
Perhaps if I plant some more leeks and take a shower instead of a bath tonight that it will all balance itself out?!

It’s been a very long time since I last sat down to blog on hello eco living. Perhaps it’s been because I’ve been too busy with my eco life?!
So how is 2010 treating me?
I’d say that I was definately using my car less. I’ve discovered park and ride which is leaving me less stressed and I’ve got more time to catch up on reading etc. It’s nice to have some human contact on my way to work that doesn’t involve beeping my horn at that bloody driver who can’ drive for toffee or the one who keeps driving up my rear end !!!
I’m trying really hard with the not buying ‘throw away’ fashion… ‘trying’ I say!! I just couldn’t resist a pretty playsuit – I’m convinced it will last me all year – wearing it now with thick tights and it will be dream with flip flops in the summer – I’m sticking with that one anyway. Other than that I’m trying to reuse, reduce and recycle where possible – some days are better than others.
My weekly intake of organic products has rocketed – good going I’d say… tick for me.
I’m not yet prepared to get growing my own veg for the summer – may be this should be the next task I should work on… I may even find a landshare person on my travels. New friends and all!
Overall I’d say 2010 was going well for me. I’m learning a lot and even if i’m not doing so well in some green areas I’m definately thinking about being green more often which I guess is one step in the right direction…

You’d think that living a green life would be kinda cheap… getting back to basics and learning to do things yourself. I guess if you do it right then it should be, but what seems to be taking the lime light is eco consumerism.
We seem to be pumped with messages of eco cars, organic face creams and many eco gagets – from mobile phone chargers to things that tell you how much electricity you’re using.
Well how about we use our car less instead of trading it in for a green one – will this not have the same effect, while saving us cash in the long run? If we want natural face creams, why don’t we dig out that book (from the library) on Victorian living and have some fun making our own? And as for these ‘eco’ gadgets, well let’s just do without – our grandparents and great grandparents did.
I don’t believe we need a device to tell us how much energy we’re using – just think about how hot you are in your house or how many times you’re boling the kettle – if you think it’s too much then reduce it – and stop buying pointless products from companies jumping on the eco band wagon. It’s beginning to really P me off.

So if you’re living in the UK at the moment, you’ll be subject to hearing all about the BIG FREEEEEZEEEE!!! How are we still alive? Frozen roads, inches upon inches of snow, cars unable to move, grid locked traffic, dwindelling supplies of grit and schools closing at the rate of notts.
Well, that’s what you’ll hear if you watch, read or listen to the county’s media. If you live your life as if you normally do you’ll see that the UK is covered with gorgeous snow, that drivers are more considerate on the roads and communities are coming together to dig each other’s pathways and drives. Kids are enjoying throwing snowballs and making snow men. (I say kids, but we all enjoy it right?)
Yes, we have to take our time and wear a few extra layers and sensible shoes… but isn’t this what winter is all about? It doesn’t come around all of the time, so let’s stop complaining and take a trip outside for a walk or a snow ball fight or a sledging competition… go on… even if it’s 8pm!!

I’ve only had my winter boots for one year. I invested and paid £100. Ouch. But I thought I may as well make the investment.
It’s now snowing and raining and generally bleak weather and my darling boots have started to leak. They’re past the point of the cobbler being able to fix them (I’m not good with boots – I leave them to get to the point of no return!). I can’t afford another pair. I can’t go on with wet feet… hang on, I don’t have to. My other half has a pair of waterproof socks. They cost a fortune (for socks – £28) but I’ve borrowed them for the winter and my tootsies are very dry.
I thought I’d share my story… I’m really trying to cut down on buying things unless I really need them. I guess in time I’ll need some new boots, but at the moment I’m very pleased with the waterproof sock find!!

Well, I’ve been thinking about what I can do to have 12 green days of Christmas…

A green Christmas this year!
1. Use paper around the house for wrapping pressies
2. Write hand written letters to people that I’d usually jot an email to
3. Dig out decorations from years gone by and resist the sparkley new angel that would look lovely on top of my tree
4. Take walks out in the countryside – wrap up warm and take a flask
5. Make a true effort to stop and talk to my neighbours. There should be more of a community spirit around
6. Drink some lovely organic wine (like the great article I read this month)
7. Reuse a Christmas dress I’ve had for years (then I reduce the chances of someone else rocking up in the same outfit!)
8. Take the bus Christmas shopping – I can’t cope with Christmas parking issues anyway
9. Use the hot water bottle rather than putting the heating on
10. Buy some natural mineral make up for the party season
11. Buy local cheeses for apres lunch!
12. Detox using some nice organic products!!

Wow, well isn’t it getting cold already? I think it’s very chilly for the first of December.

mmmmmmmm
I was lying in bed last night thinking to myself that I was very cold. Brrrrrr. I lay there for a while thinking it would just make me colder to get out of bed and put on some socks. But the longer I lay the colder I got.
Quick – I lept for the socks. Hooray. Ummm… not quite. After another harsh 20mins or so I reached for my hot water bottle – filled it up using the hot tap and ran back to bed. That was the fix of heat that I wanted.
I think me and my hot water bottle are going places this year – probably everywhere to be precise.

Being a green girl is becoming a bit more trendy don’t you think? From the clothes we wear to the chocolate we eat. Having some veg or at least herbs in your garden/ balcony is pretty cool too. I’m looking forward to exploring the world of green with you.
